Sourcing solid-state batteries is not like sourcing lithium-ion. The technology is new enough that the word “solid-state” is used loosely, supplier claims are hard to verify, and the gap between a genuine manufacturer and a company reselling semi-solid cells is wide. This guide sets out what to check before you commit a product line to a solid-state supplier.
1. All-solid-state, semi-solid, or marketing?
The first question is what is actually inside the cell. A true solid-state cell replaces the liquid electrolyte entirely. A semi-solid cell retains some liquid and delivers part of the benefit. Both are legitimate products, but they are not the same thing and should not be priced the same. Ask directly which one you are being quoted, and ask what happens at the electrode interface — a genuine manufacturer can describe its interface technology, because that is where the engineering actually is.
2. Ask for abuse test evidence, not adjectives
“Safe” means nothing on its own. The meaningful tests are puncture (nail penetration), cutting, overcharge and high-temperature storage. A real solid-state cell survives these without liquid leakage, fire, smoke or explosion, and a real manufacturer has video and reports. Note that high-temperature storage is where conventional liquid pouch cells swell and vent — if a supplier cannot show you that test, ask why.
3. Check the numbers that matter for your product

Cycle life claims in particular need context. “15,000 cycles” is meaningful if you know the chemistry, depth of discharge and temperature it was measured at.
4. Is the supplier a manufacturer or a reseller?
Ask who makes the electrolyte. A genuine solid-state battery manufacturer controls the electrolyte, the cell process and usually the production equipment, because none of these can be bought off the shelf yet. A reseller will route technical questions elsewhere and be vague about production locations. Ask for the address of the electrolyte plant and the cell plant — and whether you can visit.
5. Certification for your market
Confirm UN38.3 for transport as a minimum. Beyond that, ask for the systems and product certifications your sector requires — IATF 16949 if the cells go anywhere near automotive, ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 as a baseline, plus UL, IEC 62133, CE, RoHS and REACH depending on your market. Ask for the reports, not a logo wall.
6. Match the chemistry to the application
Solid-state is not one product. LiFePO4-based cells suit long-cycle-life applications like robotics and storage; silicon-carbon high-nickel suits energy-density-critical uses like drones and aircraft; medium-nickel ternary suits two-wheelers. If a supplier offers you the same cell for every application, they are selling what they have rather than what you need.
